After I left Melissa and Rachel’s place, I drove past the photography studio again on my way home. I knew it was probably a waste of time, but I wanted to make sure Amy wasn’t there before I contacted her parents and had them involved.

I pulled into an empty lay-by on the opposite side of the road and kept the engine running. Nothing had changed. The shutters were still fully down and locked and there was no sign of Amy’s van in the narrow car park.

I shook my head and flicked on the indicator, signalling so I could ready myself to pull away from the curb and re-join the traffic. I waited for a bus to pass and was about to take off. That’s when I saw him.

I braked immediately, keeping the car where it was and stared across the road.

To the left of Amy’s studio, not quite hidden out of sight and leaning against a phone box with his wrist in a splint, was the man in the black hoody watching the old building.

‘Oh, you bastard!’ I hissed.
